NCRI’s new report “Cyber Social Swarming Precedes Real World Riots in Leicester: How Social Media Became a Weapon for Violence”

Finding:

Our report found that social media platforms were central to agitation and fomenting real world violence against vulnerable populations in the U.K. In this thread, we use machine learning, natural language processing, network analysis, OSINT and classification to investigate.

NCRI developed a timeline describing notable events and malicious narratives. Malicious online narratives, many since deleted, played an essential role in instigating attacks in Leicester.

Malicious Narratives around “Hindutva Dominance” Underscored Cyber Swarming activity – recruit followers from the virtual world to mobilize into real world protests and violence in Leicester.

These narratives exploded and Topic Networks show that these dominance themes became top associations with the term “Hindu” overall on Twitter.

Inauthentic bot-like activity disseminated both Hinduphobic and Islamophobic messaging. Using NCRI’s tools, we found evidence of bot like accounts that disseminated both anti-Hindu and anti-Muslim messaging throughout the violence, projecting the other community as responsible.

Network of concentrated reactivity and blame towards Muslims took shape in India in response to these events.

Using ConfliBERT and HateBERT, we found numerous calls for violence, with roughly 70% of these calls targeting Hindus and 30% targeting Muslims

This incident illustrates the need to develop an early warning system to communicate information threats impacting vulnerable communities.

Moving forward, information threats can be shared with local community leaders and LE officials so they can act collaboratively to address false narratives that can lead to real-world violence.

Hyderabad: 2 burqa-clad women held for vandalising Goddess Durga idol in Navratri Pandal

Two Muslim women were detained on Tuesday for reportedly vandalising the idol of goddess Durga at a Navratri pandal in Hyderabad. The ladies barged into a pandal in the city’s Khairatabad locality and smashed a portion of the Durga statue, according to Hyderabad Police.

When a local tried to stop her, one of the ladies attacked him with a metallic tool. Locals apprehended both ladies and handed them over to the police.

DCP, Central Zone, Hyderabad, said, “In the morning we received a call that two ladies have tried to vandalize the mother Mary statue and later they also tried to vandalize the statue of Goddess Durga.” “One woman was also seen carrying a spanner and she tried to attack a local who tried to stop. However, locals caught both of them and handed them over to Saidabad police. We are trying to verify their details but they are behaving very weirdly. An investigation is underway,” the DCP further added.

The ladies also vandalised a statue of Mother Mary outside a nearby church, according to News 18. Damage to the idols and the lion sculptures adjacent to the idol was also visible in pictures from the site. The authorities are now trying to figure out who the women are and what motivated them to do this. There are no additional specifics concerning the event because the accused are not even disclosing their identities. Police are investigating if the crime was carried out with the intent of inflaming communal tensions in the area.

OpIndia recently reported how ahead of Durga Puja, unknown vandals smashed Durga idols at the Kashipur Sarbajanin Durga Temple in Mehendiganj Upazila in Barisal, Bangladesh. The leaders of Mehendiganj Puja Udjapon Parishad strongly condemned the incident and asked that those responsible face legal punishments. Nurunnabi, the Mehendiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), visited the site and gave orders to restore the temple so that it could be used for worship.

On September 8, Taufeeq Ahmed was arrested for allegedly damaging an idol of a deity at a Hindu temple in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. With a “tilak” on his forehead, Ahmed allegedly entered the temple gates and started smashing the idol of the deity while yelling “Jai Shri Ram.”

A Case of Oxygen Cylinders

A crackdown against hoarding and black-marketing of oxygen cylinders across Telangana has created some unintended hurdles for non-governmental organizations, especially in the old city of Hyderabad, who arranged oxygen cylinders at no cost to persons suspected or confirmed of COVID-19.

On July 10, Telangana chief secretary Somesh Kumar had ordered joint teams comprising officers from Drug Control Administration, Task Force of Hyderabad city police, Director of Public Health and Deputy Chief Controller of Explosives to inspect hospitals and dealers to assess whether sale and utilization of oxygen cylinders have conformed with the guidelines.

Telangana NGOs forced to stop supply of free oxygen cylinders amid crackdown against hoarding.

Social organisations say they have now stopped distribution of oxygen cylinders and this has led to several patients suffering.  Thirteen distributors, a manufacturer and an NGO, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, were warned against hoarding of oxygen cylinders while the Hyderabad police arrested a man for illegal possession of the medical devices.

Earlier, on news dated on JULY 05, 2020 in The Hindu, the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s city unit has started a free oxygen cylinder service, and later after crackdown it was an Oxygen Cylinder scam.

Some NGOs like Naasih Educational Trust & Jamiat Ulama Karnataka, Mercy Mission, Al Hafeez Tours and Travels in Bengaluru started providing free Oxygen Cylinders for varying deposits ranging anywhere between Rs. 5000 to 10,000.

A strategy to digest Hindu Smashana Bhoomi?

The Covid-19 pandemic is being used by land grabbers occasionally to occupy Muslim grave yards. But also to force Hindu grave yards to concede space for the Muslim dead. This is a land grab through the back door.

On May 27, 2020, the Muslim man who was denied the burial space by mutawallis was laid to rest in the Hindu graveyard in Hyderabad. Two Hindu men — Sandeep and Sekhar extended help to the deceased family and arranged a place to bury the man in Hindu graveyard.

  1. June 1 2020 – Muslim community is divided about allowing burial of dead bodies of Muslims in Muslim grave yards. In the meanwhile, land belonging to grave yards are being rapidly occupied by land grabbers in the constituencies of the champions of Muslim rights and identity.
  2. June 2 2020 – Muslim graveyards deny burial space for a Muslim. Hindu grave yard offers space.

While most of the major cities across the globe viz., New York, London, Los Angeles and other various cities are cremating the COVID-19 dead bodies, why the Muslims in India are burying the dead.

Even the Hindus and most of the Christians across India are also doing cremation, Muslims are only burying them.

Due to shortage of Muslim burial grounds, the Muslim authorities and Muslims are secularising the concept in burial grounds.

  • Why some Mohammedian dead bodies were buried in Hindu Smashana Vatika’s in the name of humanity?
  • How many Hindu Smashana Vatika’s have been encroached in cities by religious minorities. (In Delhi it seems there is no space)
  • These two aspects imply the fact that there is real estate cost involved in burying in local Christian / Muslim burial grounds & the target is Hindu Smashana vatika’s.
  • Statistics say that Hindu Smashana vatika lands are converted to Real estate layouts.

Will this lead to takeover of Hindu Smashana Vatikas??
