- After Monika Chhatwal’s husband passed away earlier this year, the financial burden of running the home entirely fell on her. With two children in the house, she had to find a stable livelihood.
- So, she gave up her dream of opening a restaurant. But she still wanted to cook. So she looked for opportunities to sell food from her own kitchen in Noida.
- But how could one start collecting orders other than through social media? Like so many of us, Monika could not build an app, or spend all her time marketing herself. She could cook for sure. But needed a place to sell – digitally.

- Delhi-based AI startup Devnagri is a human translation platform that combines neural machine translation and machine learning with human intervention to provide efficient and accurate services. It has more than 5,000 translators who work in 22 Indian languages.
- Inspired by the versatility and diversity of the script and the many Indian languages that use it, Himanshu Sharma and Nakul Kundra founded AI-powered startup Devnagri
- The founder claims that Devnagri is at least 10 times more efficient and accurate than other translation platforms, due to the human intervention in the translation processes. The bootstrapped startup was awarded the Best Emerging Portal For Translation & Localisation Services 2019 – INDIA by Business Mint in 2019. In 2020, Devnagri was selected in the Special Category at RAISE 2020, India’s biggest AI Solution Challenge for Indian startups, in the Natural Language Processing (NLP) category.
- All data is fed into the platform, which provides a rough translation of the content. The platform uses an end-to-end open-source machine learning by Google called TensorFlow, used for NLP. Devnagri has built its own proprietary translation engine using TensorFlow.

- जैसा कि हम सभी जानते हैं कि भारतीय रेलवे विश्व के सबसे बड़े रेलवे नेटवर्क्स में से एक है। भारतीय रेलवे 68 हज़ार किलोमीटर से भी ज्यादा लम्बे ट्रैक्स के जरिए हर साल लगभग 8 बिलियन यात्रियों को सुविधा दे रहा है। आने वाले समय में यह आंकड़ा और भी बढ़ेगा।
- हर दिन लाखों की संख्या में यात्रियों को अपने गन्तव्य तक पहुँचाने वाले इस रेलवे नेटवर्क को चलने के लिए बहुत ज्यादा ऊर्जा की ज़रूरत होती है। भारतीय रेलवे की एक रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, फ़िलहाल, रेलवे की वार्षिक ऊर्जा जरूरत 20 अरब यूनिट की है। इस ऊर्जा की आपूर्ति के लिए रेलवे अनवीकरणीय स्रोतों पर निर्भर है। हालांकि, पिछले कुछ सालों में लगभग 50% रेलवे को बिजली से जोड़ा गया है। आने वाले समय में बाकी रेलवे को भी बिजली से जोड़ा जाएगा।
- रेलवे बोर्ड के चेयरमैन विनोद कुमार यादव कहते हैं, “आर्थिक विकास और खपत में हुई बढ़ोतरी के चलते साधनों की मांग भी बढ़ी है। लेकिन सस्टेनेबिलिटी के लिए ज़रूरी है कि हम आर्थिक विकास के साथ-साथ पर्यावरण के मुद्दों पर भी ध्यान दें।”
- गौरतलब है कि कार्बन उत्सर्जन क्लाइमेट चेंज में अहम भूमिका निभाता है, जिसमें भारत के परिवहन क्षेत्र का लगभग 12% योगदान है। इस 12% में से 4% भाग सिर्फ भारतीय रेलवे का है और इसलिए ही, भारतीय रेलवे खुद को पूर्ण रूप से ग्रीन एनर्जी से चलाना चाहता है। इससे रेलवे पर्यावरण के लिए हानि का कारण नहीं होगी और साथ ही, आत्म-निर्भर बनेगी। (The Better India, 28 October 2020) News Link

- केरल के कोची में रहने वाले 46 वर्षीय जैविक किसान एंथनी के. ए. शहर में सालों से खाली पड़ी या फिर कूड़ा-कचरा इकट्ठा करने के लिए इस्तेमाल की जा रही ज़मीनों पर तरह-तरह की सब्ज़ियां उगा रहे हैं। लॉकडाउन के दौरान उन्होंने इस प्रोजेक्ट पर काम करना शुरू किया और अब तक वह दो फसलें ले चुके हैं।
- 12वीं कक्षा तक पढ़े एंथनी पिछले 10 सालों से अलग-अलग जगह पर जैविक खेती कर रहे हैं और इसके साथ ही वह एक ऑर्गेनिक स्टोर भी चलाते हैं।
- अपने इस सफर के बारे में एंथनी ने द बेटर इंडिया को बताया, “मेरे परिवार का पुश्तैनी काम खेती ही था। एक वक़्त ऐसा भी आया जब मुझे खेती घाटे का सौदा लगने लगा और मैं अलग-अलग तरह के बिज़नेस में अपना हाथ आजमाने लगा। लेकिन वक़्त के साथ मुझे समझ में आ गया कि खेती पर ही ध्यान देना चाहिए। साथ ही, खेती के प्रति लोगों का नजरिया भी बदल रहा था। मुझे बहुत से लोगों से जैविक खेती के बारे में जानने को मिला। मैंने एक-दो किसानों से इसके बारे में बातचीत की और समझने की कोशिश की। फिर मुझे ऑर्गेनिक खेती पर होने वाले कोर्स के बारे में पता चला।”

- श्याम इन दिनों लीची, आम, अनार, नींबू, केला, पपीता, नाशपाती जैसे 45 फलदार पेड़ों के साथ पारंपरिक फसलों की खेती भी कर रहे हैं। इनके खेत में आपको धान-गेहूँ, दाल के अलावा हल्दी, अदरक की खेती भी देखने को मिलेगी।
- श्याम ने द बेटर इंडिया को बताया, “यह बात 1991 की है। मेरे पिता जी और चाची जी, दोनों की मौत कैंसर से हो गई थी। उस वक्त मुझे विचार आया कि आधुनिक कृषि तकनीकों की वजह से कई जहरीले रसायन हमारे खान-पान के जरिए शरीर को नुकसान पहुँचा रहे हैं। इसी जद्दोजहद में मैंने शिक्षक की नौकरी को छोड़ प्राकृतिक खेती शुरू कर दी।”
- वह आगे बताते हैं, “मैं लगभग 25 वर्षों से गन्ना, धान, गेहूँ जैसे फसलों की ही खेती कर रहा था। लेकिन मैं 2017 में, पद्मश्री पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किसान सुभाष पालेकर जी से मिला और लखनऊ में उनके एक हफ्ते के प्रशिक्षण शिविर में हिस्सा लिया। यहाँ मैंने खेती के फाइव लेयर मॉडल के बारे में जानकारी हासिल की।”

- India Imports 80% of Its Orchids. Meet the Telangana Farmer Changing This

- Orchids are aesthetically pleasing flowers that are often used to decorate wedding venues in India. But, did you know that 80 percent of orchids sold in the country are imported from Thailand? Samir Baghat, a successful Telangana industrialist with a steel and iron manufacturing business, has decided to slowly change that by growing these flowers on his farm in Sangareddy district, Telangana.
- Samir and his relative Praveen Gupta decided to venture into the agri-business because they wanted to try something new and were always fond of growing plants.
- In 2015, they purchased eight acres of land in Sangareddy, which they named Mistwood Farms, and started to experiment with growing vegetables such as zucchini and fruits like pomegranate. However, the experiment failed because the soil was predominantly black and did not support the healthy growth of crops.
- “In 2016, while thinking about what I could grow without soil, I came across a farmer in Raipur who was growing orchids and was reaping decent profits by selling the cut flowers in the local flower market. These plants are not grown in soil but in another medium made of cocopeat predominantly. So I decided to try my hand at orchids too and did research online about how I could grow them in Telangana,” says Samir, adding that he did 90 percent of his research on the internet and ordered tissue cultured saplings of the Dendrobium variety of orchids in various colours from Thailand.
- The saplings were planted in pots with a mix of cocopeat and charcoal.“The first few were a failure,” recalls Samir. “Either they did not grow or did not produce flowers. But, after further research and providing extra care in terms of humidity and moisture, within 45-days we were successfully able to produce flowers. The flowers need a temperature of 20 degree Celsius and humidity of 80 percent to grow. So, I approached the horticulture department in Telangana to request their help to set up a polyhouse, on my farm, to regulate the temperature conditions. I also explained about the process of growing it and how if done on a large scale, it could generate profit as there were not many producers in India,” says Samir.

- दरअसल, यह बात साल 2014 की है, जब उनकी मुलाकात मथुरा के तत्कालीन जिलाधिकारी बी. चंद्रकला से हुई। इस दौरान डीएम बी. चंद्रकला ने उन्हें ग्रामीण तबके के महिलाओं को माहवारी के दौरान होने वाली पीड़ा के बारे में बताया। उनकी इस बात का महेश खंडेलवाल पर काफी गहरा असर हुआ।
- इसके बाद, लोगों द्वारा मजाक बनाए जाने के बाद भी उन्होंने न सिर्फ बाजार में उपलब्ध सेनिटरी नैपकिन के मुकाबले बेहद सस्ता और पर्यावरण के अनुकूल पैड बनाने की जिम्मेदारी उठायी, बल्कि अपने नए-नए तकनीकी प्रयोगों से जमीनी स्तर पर एक बड़े बदलाव की मुहिम छेड़ दी।
- इसके बारे में महेश ने द बेटर इंडिया को बताया, “आज देश की करोड़ों महिलाओं को सेनिटरी नैपकिन की जरूरत पड़ती है, लेकिन ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में आज भी सेनिटरी नैपकिन को व्यवहार में नहीं लाया जाता है, जिससे कई स्वास्थ्य संबंधी चिंताएं उभर रही हैं। मेरा उद्देश्य एक ऐसे उत्पाद को विकसित करने का था, जिसे स्थानीय महिलाओं द्वारा निर्मित किया जा सके।”

- IIT-Khargpur Innovates New Vegetable Oil Packed With Nutrients For the Same Cost

- The vegetable oil in our kitchens may soon be replaced with a healthier blend. The same solution could also turn into a healthier alternative for solid fats in dairy products, in the form of powdered vegetable oil consumables. All of that thanks to an award-winning innovation by IIT-Kharagpur researchers, that promises healthy vegetable oil rich in antioxidants and low on saturated fat.
- Researchers at IIT-Kharagpur claim their patented blend of oils, which is mixed with market-available vegetable oil, makes it low on cholesterol, trans and saturated fats.
- “The proportion of saturated fats varies in the content. However, our oil is endowed with natural antioxidants along with the right proportion of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. They are commonly known as (MUFA & PUFA),” says Hari Mishra, Department of Agricultural and Food Engineering.
- Hari, who heads the project, said the oils are carefully chosen and blended in a particular proportion, combined with patented technology, making it a good replacement for existing vegetable oils.
